Love is simply an electrical bug in the human neural circuit.

—Ryuunosuke Akasaka

Ryuunosuke Akasaka (赤坂 龍之介 Akasaka Ryūnosuke) is a resident of room 102. He is a second-year student of Suiko. He is a recluse who rarely leaves his room, and usually communicates with others with cellphone messages or e-mails. To reduce the need to communicate with others, he programmed an AI program, "Maid".

As an expert with computers and programming, he contributes lots of useful advice and information to Sorata Kanda for the latter's computer game. According to Ryuunosuke, his ultimate goal is to make Maid become a real human.

He has a condition called gynophobia (a fear of women) and will even pass out when girls touch him, which becomes worse after Ainsworth Rita falls in love with him.

Appearance

Ryuunosuke has straight waist-length black hair and dark reddish-maroon eyes. He is usually seen wearing his school uniform, and if not; just casual clothes. He may even pass as a girl with such appearance due to the feminine features he has.

Ryuunosuke is aware that he looks like a girl and seemingly has no problem with it. He even puts on a maid outift during the cultural festival of their second year in high school without protesting much. He states "It's just a school festival, what are you making a fuss over". In the visual novel, he is forced to wear a nurse outfit. This time though, he has more complaints.

He is described to be shorter than Rita in the light novel by a few centimeters, whereas he's slightly taller than her in the anime.

Personality

Ryuunosuke is a very pragmatic person. Extremely intelligent, he can decipher the true natures of people. However, he seldom holds regard for the feelings of others, and ends up hurting some of them due to his nature of being frank and direct. He also seems to have a cold distant look on his face, but when caught off guard, he is actually soft.

Like most residents of Sakurasou, he is open with his feelings but sometimes he is a tsundere (hot/cold personality) towards Rita, and puts his skills to good use. He is reserved, making him an extremely mysterious person. Most people let him be, except for Rita, who is interested in him. He seems to have feelings for Rita but he doesn't want to admit it because of his gynophobia. This unique nature of him is due to his identity as a hikikomori. It is said that he became alone after his friends shunned him because they recoiled at his "harsh" criticisms during a group project, which caused him to be wary of friendship.

If there is anything that he loves besides computers, it would be tomatoes. He would be seen eating them almost all the time, even in class, reasoning out that tomatoes are 'superfood'.

History

In middle school, Ryuunosuke had plans to create a game with Maya and 2 other guys (3 in the light novel). The project ended up failing, because he was the only one who believed it was possible for them to make a game at that age. The four promised they would enroll into Suiko high school and university, but only Ryuunosuke ended up going there.

Ryuunosuke grew up in a household full of women. His three sisters copied the manners of their mother. They were deceiving and demanding of men. Every night, his sisters would come in his room and complain about how bad the men were who went on dates with them to michelin star restaurants. Ryuunosuke's view of women became distorted and he grew to despise women. Even so, his sisters and his mom spoil him rotten and love him to death. He hasn't gone home once since entering Suiko.

Relationships

Rita Ainsworth

Ryuunosuke, almost all the time, shuns Rita away, due to his gynophobia and his perception of her as a (former) freeloader. At the start of the series, the two weren't on particularly good terms, but over time, Rita fell in love with after getting to know him better. However, Ryuunosuke is willing to stay in the bathroom for hours to get away from her, as he is extremely sensitive to Rita's sublime devices of submission (her breasts and figure). However, even if this is so, he still listens to her when she has something to say. However. later on, he is willing to do simple things, like shaking her hand as parting ways, and he is also comfortable enough to sit near her, even slightly blushing in her presence. She also kissed him on the cheek once, making it his, and also Rita's first kiss, and the second time, the lips; both times making him extremely embarrassed, even fainting the second time. Despite this, they have remained quite close. In the fifth novel, Rita even went to Japan just to give him a Valentine present despite her schedule being busy.

When Rita moves to Sakurasou in volume 9, Ryuunosuke and Kanna are the only ones to object. She's let in with Sorata's deciding vote. During her time at Sakurasou and the events of volume 10, she tries to help Ryuunosuke to get over his fear of women. He ends up getting a fever from Rita's therapy and as a result, he starts resenting women even more. After high school, their relationship progresses. Ryuunosuke agrees to go on multiple dates about once a month. By the time they're in their second year of university, their kiss count has gone up by 3. On december 24th in their second year of university, Rita tells Ryuunosuke she's moving back to England to pursue her dreams and asks Ryuunosuke whether it's okay for her to expect him to reciprocate her feelings one day. Ryuunosuke remains silent when they're interrupted by Mashiro. It's hinted that Ryuunosuke somewhat likes her, but refrains from saying it so he doesn't interfere with Rita's dreams.

Maid

Maid is Ryuunosuke's third hand. He created her to decrease his need for social interaction, but soon developed her into a more complex AI program. Her appearance is a chibi lookalike to an old classmate from his backstory, having the exact same hairstyle and similar faces. Maid earnestly does her duties, since he is her master. Ryuunosuke has stated that he wants Maid to become a real human, because that would show how advanced technology has become.

Sorata Kanda

Ryuunosuke is shown to have a friendly relationship with Sorata, often asking for help in situations he is uncomfortable in. They're seen joking around fairly frequently in the earlier volumes of the light novel. He helps Sorata with his programming, and often gives advice and tips for how to improve, and judges his work. Though Sorata has stated that he hates the part of Ryuunosuke that dictates and reveals the true nature of others, he still puts up with him. He calls Sorata "Kanda".

In the novels, Sorata is the first person to discover Ryuunosuke's past (whereas it was Rita in the anime). During this time, they decide to take part in a game creating competition called 'game camp' alongside Iori, Rita, Kanna and Misaki. It is revealed that Ryuunosuke's dream is to make a game in a team and that after failing to do so in middle school, Sorata was the one who gave him courage to try again. After high school, the two rent a studio together to pursue game creation and develop 'Rhythm battlers 2'. After two years, Sorata and Ryuunosuke launch a game company together and Iori moves in with them.

Iori Himemiya

Iori and Ryuunosuke start working on a game alongside Sorata in volume 9. Iori provides the team with all of the music they need. Ryuunosuke is initially sceptical of Iori's abilities and threathens to kick him from the team. After Iori proves himself, he is accepted into the game team and he eventually moves in with Sorata and Ryuunosuke after high school. Ryuunosuke's attitude to Iori is a bit cold, but he appreciates his contributions to the team.

Maya Ikejiri

Maya was Ryuunosuke's classmate in middle school and a good friend. Together alongside two other boys, they tried to make a game. It is hinted in the anime that Maya was the final one to leave Ryuunosuke behind in the project. Later in the light novel, it is confirmed she was in love with Ryuunosuke and that their feelings were mutual.
