Sakura Dormitory is a dorm of the high school affiliated with Suimei University of the Arts (often shortened as Suiko), which hosts the strangest, trouble-making students. After being kicked out of the normal dorm for keeping a stray cat, Kanda Sorata moves into Sakura Dormitory. As he starts to get used to the life in the dorm, Shiina Mashiro, a world famous artist who cannot even take care of her daily life, moves in. Sorata is forced to become Mashiro's handler. The story is about their daily life as well as mental growth.

The story touches issues of dreams, passions, and the pursuit of what we want, and the journey the characters embark in to discover themselves. It slightly takes on the issue of how unfair life is to people. Lastly, the story gives innuendoes on society and how it judgmentally perceives people.

  • The Mainichi Shimbun reported in April 2012 that the novels have sold over 850,000 copies. The series has received negative criticism for its gender roles, in particular the character of Mashiro Shiina being portrayed as a sexy, dependent pet.
